Keynote Speaker - Michele Berg, Ph.D.

Title: Working Memory and Dyslexia: An Exploration of the Relationship Between Reading Skills and Short-Term, Long-Term, and Working Memory Functions
Description: Over the past 30 years, numerous studies have reported strong relationships between working memory performance and reading skills at all levels.  Students with dyslexia are vulnerable to weaknesses in working memory.  This presentation will explore the relationship between memory functions and basic reading skills and reading comprehension.  The link between executive functions and working memory will be explained.  Strategies to support short-term, long-term, and working memory deficits in the struggling reader will be discussed.

Breakout Speaker - Michele Berg, Ph.D.
Title: Understanding and Remediating Working Memory Deficits in Students with Dyslexia
Description: This breakout is a continuation of the keynote address with a focus on strategies.

Breakout Speaker - Elizabeth Hamblet
Title: Preparing Students with Disabilities for Successful Transition to College
Description:
The transition to college can be challenging for students with disabilities, but with the proper preparation, they can enjoy success!  Author and Columbia University learning specialist Elizabeth Hamblet explains how the system for accommodations works at college, describes students' rights and responsibilities within that system, and shares what the research says are the skills students should develop while they're in high school to ensure success when they reach college.  She also reviews the documentation students need to apply for accommodations and discusses what accommodations may be available.

Breakout Speaker - James Carter, M.A., CCC, SLP

Title: Stories of Hope and Lessons from the Trenches
Description: Is your child or student struggling?  Does it seem like they are losing their way at school, but you do not know where to begin helping them?  The goal of this presentation is to discuss various avenues you can pursue to find help for your child.  In addition, you will gain insights from parents and professionals who have navigated this road already.  Watching children you love and care about face difficulties is heartbreaking, but you have the power to evoke change in conjunction with the resources around you.  Come and learn where to begin.

Breakout Speakers: Libby Hall, M.Ed., CALP and Bonnie Jones, M.S., CCC, SLP
Title: S'more Vocabulary: Igniting the Campfire of Language and Reading with the Kindling of Vocabulary
Description: Participants will explore current research in vocabulary instruction as it supports expressive and receptive language skills, while simultaneously improving reading comprehension, story visualization and word attack strategies. Campers’ lanterns will be lit with techniques and tricks to incorporate into the classroom or private therapy setting.

Breakout Speaker: Christopher Woodin, Ed.M.
Title: High Interest, Hands-On Algebra Activities for the L.L.D. Student
Description:
Innovative, hands-on activities will be demonstrated that teach concepts, structured procedures and applications relating to elementary and middle school algebra. Students with language-based learning disabilities learn to articulate concepts as they relate to multimodal activities and their resulting episodic memories of these events. Structured methodologies pertaining to formulas, the commutative and distributive properties, proportions and percentages, integers, as well as equations and their graphs will be demonstrated. Students' learning styles will be acknowledged through the development of multimodal and semantic-based strategies, and graphic organizers that compensate for weaknesses in memory systems, modality integration, and comorbid executive function disorders.

Breakout Speaker: Christopher Woodin, Ed.M.
Title:
Division: Link Division Concepts with Scaffolded Output Procedures for the Whole-to-Part Multimodal Learner
Description:
Provide students with ways to conceptualize and process increasingly complex division procedures through multimodal activities that utilize visual and kinesthetic processing. Consistent, familiar graphic organizers help students produce, organize and compare requisite facts then apply them to the conventional long division procedure. The techniques presented support various learning styles and culminate in the ability to estimate and calculate quotients in an accurate and fluent manner.

Breakout Speaker: Christopher Woodin, Ed.M.
Title:
Fostering Independence on Independent Math Assignments for the L.L.D. Student
Description:
Adapt commercially produced materials to provide missing structure and scaffolding so that students (not their parents) can complete independent assignments. Learn strategies to get students to activate their prior knowledge base, identify and produce unfamiliar facts, create diagrams to process text-bound problems, and impose self-checking strategies. Learn to scaffold independence by providing practice with embedded subroutines prior to initiating multistep procedures. Foster increased vigilance and precision by providing solutions to multistep problems while requiring documentation of the solution process.
