Instructor: Joseph Piacenza PhD, MBA

Dr. Joseph Piacenza earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of South Florida (USF), and completed his MBA at USF with a focus on entrepreneurship and management. While working toward his MBA, Dr. Piacenza founded and managed an automotive-based small business for seven years.  After selling the company, he concurrently pursued his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Oregon State University focusing on concept-stage robust design for complex infrastructure systems.  Additional active research areas include robust optimization, identifying cyber-physical attacks in manufacturing system, sustainable building design, and sea turtle satellite tracking tag design. Dr. Piacenza instructs the mechanical engineering Junior Design course, and is actively involved with hands on and interdisciplinary student design projects. In addition, he is the Faculty advisor for SAE Baja.

Program Description:

Introduction to industry standards for graphical representation of objects and simulation of processes utilizing 2D presentations and 3D modeling using SOLIDWORKS.
The course will cover the following:
  • Identify basic dimensioning and tolerancing terminology and requirements.
  • Create common pictorial representations of objects used in industry such as orthographic views, section views, and auxiliary views.
  • Create 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional drawings of mechanical objects.
  • Perform elementary simulations of mechanical or thermal processes.

  • Engineering drafting, dimension and tolerancing
  • 3-dimensional drawing
  • 3D simulation
  • CAD design for manufacturing
NOTE: You will need your own laptop for this workshop. If at all possible, please bring a Windows laptop instead of a Mac, as it is more complicated to get SolidWorks to work properly on a Mac, and technical support for Mac will not be available. It is also highly recommended that you bring a three-button mouse that has a middle scroll wheel, as it will make your drawing process much more efficient than using the touchpad of your laptop.

If you do not have SolidWorks, you will have the opportunity to install a trial version during the first day of the workshop
