The Men’s Club of Temple Or Elohim of Jericho is pleased to announce that New York Mets legend Dwight Gooden will participate in an exclusive interview-style event “Talking Baseball and Beyond” along with TV News Commentator and Newsday Colunist and Pulitzer Prize-winner Ellis Henican, who co-wrote Gooden's book "Doc: A Memoir"
Mr. Gooden will share his life story with Ellis Henican, Newsday Columnist and TV and Radio commentator (and co-author of "Doc: A Memoir) and us, thru all it's highs and lows, and give us a glimpse of a very human transformation that has made him the man he is today.
DWIGHT "DOC" GOODEN
In 1984, at the age of nineteen, Dwight brought his 98 mph fastball to the major league stage, electrifying baseball in a season rarely seen in the history of the game. He earned the title of "Rookie of the Year," quickly becoming the best pitcher in the National League receiving the coveted Cy Young Award in 1985, In just his third season, he led the New York Mets to a World Series Championship, dominating almost every batter that stepped up to homeplate. The "action" on his pitches had him seemingly destined for the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
But while he was receiving unprecedented accolades on the diamond, it was his behaviors off the field that were receiving an equal amount of attention, from the press to his fans and the baseball world.
Gooden's story transcends baseball. From his tumultuous childhood in Tampa, to becoming a four-time MLB All-Star, pitching a no hitter for the New York Yankees in 1996, inevitably winning three World Championships, Mr. Gooden's story is a definitive look at life, equal parts inspiring and heartbreaking.
ELLIS HENICAN
Mr. Henican is a columnist for Newsday and a Television commentator. Ellis is also the voice of Stormy on the hit Cartoon Network series "Sealab 2021." His books include New York Times best sellers "Home Team: Coaching the Saints and New Orleans Back to Life " (with Sean Payton), "In the Blink of an Eye: Dale, Daytona and the Day that Changed Everything" (with Michael Waltrip), "Damn Few: Making the Modern SEAL Warrior" (with Rorke Denver) and The Party's Over: How the Extreme Right Hijacked the GOP and I Became a Democrat (with Charlie Crist).
"Doc: A Memoir" written with Dwight Gooden, was published June 2013.
