The workshop will include the definition of Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as discussion of the efficacy of MI and the foundations of MI. Participants will gain an understanding of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation and will learn about the Presence exercise, and the MI spirit and principles. MI skills will be reviewed through didactic and experiential learning and video presentation. Participants will learn about the application of empathic reflections, affirmations, open-ended questions, summaries, and sustain talk. 

Who Should Attend: 

Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.    

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to define and explain the basic principles of motivational interviewing (MI)
  • Participants will understand the usefulness of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
  • Participants will be able to describe and demonstrate the four skills of MI: open-ended questions, affirmations, (empathic) reflections and summaries (OARS)
  • Participants will learn what sustain talk and discord are and how to address them
