Racism, Privilege and Oppression

3 Continuing Education Hours

LMSW/LCSW/LMHC/LCAT/LMFT

Mental Health Professionals are called to work with diverse populations. Although it is impossible to become an expert on all ethnic, racial, and religious groups that we work with, basic understandings of the concepts of oppression and privilege, specifically how they intersect with race, is essential to successful work with individuals, groups and communities.

Central to the concept of racism is the idea of “Whiteness”. We will deconstruct whiteness and privilege and show how a deeper understanding of these concepts can help us connect better as professionals and those that we serve.

We will examine how privilege and oppression in regards to race intersects with the educational, mental health and criminal justice systems, making poor outcomes more likely. Participants will be challenged to think of how they can address these issues in our practice in order to better serve our clients, and, how linking with social justice movements is an integral, albeit often ignored, step in this process of healing and change.

Who Should Attend:                                                                                                                           Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working in the mental health field.

At the end of the workshops participants will be able to:
1. State the connections between racism, privilege, oppression and poor outcomes.
2. Demonstrate a general understanding of the concepts of privilege and oppression.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of racism and oppresion on the lives of those we serve.
4. Show an understanding of what a tranformational approach to social work entails in regards to privilege an oppression.
