The Heroin Awareness and Prevention Initiative

null

Leadership 21 is a West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance program designed to improve the quantity, quality and effectiveness of leadership along the I-75 Growth Corridor and within the communities of West Chester and Liberty Townships. Area leaders are selected, through an application process, to participate in a program of community education and leadership training. Leadership 21 calls upon business owners and managers, government and school leaders and citizen volunteers to study in-depth, varied aspects of our region.

About the Class of 2015:

During our leadership sessions throughout the year, the topic of heroin addiction kept surfacing. As we began to study our criminal justice system, the local community, government leaders, and safety professionals, we began to see a common thread: The threat of heroin in our community is REAL, and it affects everyone. When the time came to select a class project, we chose to focus on this prevalent issue in Butler County and beyond by developing a Heroin Awareness and Prevention Initiative.

About The Heroin Awareness and Prevention Initiative:

The Leadership 21 class of 2015 had the unique pleasure of meeting individuals from the Opiate Task Force and Sojourner Recovery Services. Through these interactions, we discovered the need for education and awareness regarding heroin use and its dangers. We decided to create an informative video highlighting the dangers and facts surrounding heroin use, to be shown in the local schools and used by drug abuse recovery professionals.

Heroin Facts:

• In the 400 cases investigated by Butler County Coroner’s Office in 2014, “Drug Overdose” was the #1 cause of death (Source: Butler County Opiate Task Force)

• 75% of those deaths were caused by heroin (Source: Butler County Opiate Task Force)

• The city of Middletown spent $1.5 million in 2014 dealing with the effects of heroin (Source: Dayton Daily News 1-25-15)

• 40-60 percent of drug addicts will relapse (Source: Dayton Daily News 1-25-15)
