Teacher's Trauma Toolbox:
Getting Started with Trauma Conscious Teaching

Jumpstart your journey to being a more trauma-informed teacher- these basic tools will help you better serve students who have experienced trauma. We will learn together through group discussion, trying out strategies via case scenarios, experiential activities, and individual reflection.

Part 1: Building a shared understanding
What is trauma, how does it impact our students, and what is our role as educators?

Part 2: Self-reflection and self-awareness
How do our own experiences, past and present, influence our work, and what strategies  can we use to be grounded in the work?

Part 3: Classroom strategies and interventions
What can we practically do in our classrooms to support students who have experienced trauma?

Part 4: Identifying next steps, building partnerships, and sharing resources
What resources and connections are available to us to continue developing our skills?

You’ll leave the workshop with concrete strategies, a personalized action/research plan, and resources for further learning.

About the Instructor

Alex Shevrin Venet is a teacher educator through Antioch  University New England and Castleton Center for Schools, and an instructor at the Community College of Vermont. She is a former school leader at an alternative therapeutic school, where she supported youth affected by trauma, poverty, and other adverse life experiences. She believes that all students need a safe and caring school environment and that we create this environment through  unconditional positive regard for the person and conditional response to the  behaviors, recognizing the dynamic and complex lives of our students.
