Trauma Conscious Pedagogy and Reflective Practice

In this experience, teachers will incorporate their growing knowledge of trauma into their pedagogical design. Each week, the instructor will offer readings and discussion prompts, and participants will reflect on their current classroom practice. Topics will include student voice and choice, balancing predictability and flexibility, fostering class community, and incorporating student strengths and interests. Participants will be encouraged to do an action-research cycle, incorporating a key component of trauma-informed classroom practice.

Format: This is a 4 week online, asynchronous learning experience using readings and discussion.

About the instructor:

Alex Shevrin is a teacher educator through   Antioch University New England and Castleton   Center for Schools, and an instructor at the   Community College of Vermont. She is a former   school leader at an alternative therapeutic   school, where she supported youth affected by trauma, poverty, and other adverse life experiences. She believes that all students need a safe and caring school environment and that we create this environment through  unconditional positive regard for the person and conditional response to the  behaviors, recognizing the dynamic and complex lives of our students.

This event fulfills Competency 3 and 4 of  theTrauma-Conscious Teaching Microcredential
