A classical theme in our course of study, Figure in the Garden, represents valuable elements many of the art masters taught us from 19th century, which we endeavor to preserve. Each year we provide a workshop born out of inspiration from one of our favorite Dutch painters, in this case, Peder Severin Kroyer. He was undeniably the most colorful of the Skagen Painters; a community of Danish and Nordic artists who lived, gathered or worked in Skagen, Denmark, especially during the final decades of the 19th century.
In this workshop, participants paint 'en plein air', capturing our muse as seated in the garden. The goal of the course is to learn to compose the figure in a dynamic environment and establish the right value - color relationship, simple but strong shapes that make the painting successful.
Working from a live model, students will begin with a color study, and be lead through drawing the main compositional elements in charcoal. With color sketches established, blocking in main color value masses with paint will pave the way for images to completion, with dedication to the sense of space and atmosphere around the human figure.
