Guest Speaker Professor James Park

James Park is Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law.  He is an expert on corporate law and securities regulation.  Professor Park will be presenting on “Avoiding Losses from Securities Fraud:  Lessons from History.”   The professor’s presentation has been well received by book at the Museum of American Finance in New York City, the Council of Institutional Investors, CalPers, the Academy of Accounting Historians, and the CFA Societies of San Diego, Dallas, Milwaukee, Seattle, Atlanta, and Columbus.

UCLA School of Law Professor James Park will discuss his new book on the history of securities fraud regulation. The Valuation Treadmill: How Securities Fraud Threatens the Integrity of Public Companies examines case studies of major securities frauds from the 1970s to the present involving companies such as Penn Central, Apple, Enron, Citigroup, and General Electric. It identifies common methods that public corporations use to deceive investors and how the law protects investors from securities fraud. The hope is that by understanding how securities fraud works, the audience will have a better understanding of how to avoid losses from fraud. Professor Park will also discuss recent cases involving FTX, Theranos, and Nikola.

After graduating from Yale Law School, Professor Park clerked for federal judges and practiced law in New York City at a law firm and then as an Assistant Attorney General in the Investor Protection Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
