About the Unit

Ten Faith Community nurses were members of our focus group for this unit.  The
group identified the following priorities:

  • What is dementia?
  • What are they symptoms?
  • How to recognize it?
  • Can it be prevented?  If so, how?
  • When diagnosed, what can you do about it?
  • Caregiving, what to do?
  • How can women get more or additional information they need?

The 14 pilot sessions held earlier this year were well-received by the men and women in the audiences.  This new unit covers the priorities of the focus group and emphasizes core education about dementia.  While caregiver issues are included in the unit, we quickly learned that there is not enough time to fully address this difficult topic and the many specific issues and concerns that caregivers have during this presentation format. Caregivers need time and space to tell their stories and get specific questions answered.  As we will discuss at the training event, we suggest offering a follow-up session specific to caregiver issues with a local resource person there to help listen and refer individuals to appropriate resources.
