An In-Depth Adult Case Interpretation: Long-Term Therapy Client, Three Administrations

Joni L. Mihura & Philip Keddy

This 4-hour online workshop by Joni Mihura, Ph.D., A.B.A.P., and Philip Keddy, Ph.D. focuses on an adult case that illustrates the clinical application of R-PAS. The workshop focuses on a female adult client in long-term therapy with one of the presenters. Brief video clips of the patient will illustrate her behaviors and presentation. One R-PAS protocol will be the main focus in order to learn R-PAS interpretation, but ending the workshop by comparing 3 R-PAS protocols over several years--discussing what personality characteristics were stable and healthy, what problematic characteristics improved, and what work could still be accomplished.

After enrolling in the workshop, participants will be able to request a copy of the R-PAS results for this clinical case in order to familiarize themselves with the case specifics before the workshop. This will not only maximize the time spent in the workshop but also allow the participants to be more meaningfully involved in discussing the interpretations for the case. In general, participants will receive training in the principles and procedures for generating interpretive inferences that most closely align with the research literature and the psychological processes that are involved in generating each response.

Throughout we provide time that allows for questions, comments, and discussion with those in attendance. This workshop should be useful for people who teach personality assessment, but it is especially aimed at the needs of practitioners. It should appeal to practitioners and teachers interested in learning how to more fully and accurately understand clients through multimethod clinical assessments that incorporate making careful inferences from valid, performance-based R-PAS scales.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  1. Summarize the R-PAS principles for accurate interpretation and contrast them with previous models.
  2. Apply R-PAS interpretive procedures and guidelines to a case.
  3. Utilize the R-PAS results output to make accurate interpretations.
  4. Utilize and apply the R-PAS interpretive output to a case.

Facilitators:

Joni L. Mihura, PhD, ABAP, is Professor of Psychology at the University of Toledo, where she teaches personality assessment, advanced assessment, and psychodynamic/integrative psychotherapy. She received early career awards from the American Psychoanalytic Association and the Society for Personality Assessment (SPA), as well as the Walter G. Klopfer Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Literature from SPA and is a Fellow and past board member of SPA. Dr. Mihura serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Personality Assessment and Rorschachiana, has published many articles and chapters on psychological assessment, and is coeditor of the R-PAS casebook Using the Rorschach Performance Assessment SystemŪ (R-PASŪ)(2018) and the Handbook of Gender and Sexuality in Psychological Assessment (2016). She is a codeveloper of R-PAS (www.r-pas.org) and presents invited lectures and trainings internationally.

Philip J. Keddy, Ph.D., is in independent practice in Oakland, California. He is an Adjunct Faculty member in the doctoral psychology program at the Wright Institute, Berkeley. He has taught the Rorschach-Performance Assessment System (R-PAS) there annually since 2011, the year the system was first released. Dr. Keddy has a chapter in the Using the Rorschach Performance Assessment System book, edited by Drs. Mihura and Meyer, titled “Using R-PAS in the Pre-Employment Evaluation of a Candidate for a Roman Catholic Seminary.” He has presented at annual conventions of the Society for Personality Assessment, and at the 2014 meeting of the International Congress of Rorschach and Projective Methods in Istanbul. He has had articles accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Personality Assessment. Dr. Keddy’s work has always involved both assessment and psychotherapy so collaborative assessment has been a special interest. Before entering full-time independent practice in 2001, Dr. Keddy worked half-time in an adult outpatient alcohol and drug program for 11 years. He has held a current APA Certificate of Proficiency in the treatment of alcohol and other psychoactive substance use disorders since 1996 and has taught about addictions as well. He has had clinical experience with a variety of populations, starting as an undergraduate in Toronto. Dr. Keddy was a staff psychologist in a residential treatment program for three years after first receiving his Ph.D. He is currently heading a four-person team to have a new annotated translation of Rorschach’s book, Psychodiagnostics, ready for the 100 the anniversary of the original publication.
