Shaping the Future of Lipidomics

--Kim Ekroos, PhD Lipidomics Consulting Ltd.Esbo, Finland

Lipids are recognized as extremely diversified molecules. The complexity is confounded bythe fact that the absolute quantity of individual molecular lipids can differ among lipid speciesup to several million-fold depending on the matrix of origin. These features unprecedentedlycomplicate a precise assessment of the actual number of lipid entities and their identities andquantities, including their localizations, making up a lipidome of a biological system.

Mass spectrometry (MS)-based lipidomics has revolutionized lipid research, driven by highexpectation in its ability to afford new opportunities for studying lipids in health and disease, and in many other fields of research. The ability to identify and quantify numerous lipid speciesin cells, tissues and biofluids is currently drawing major attention to this technology. During thelast decades, we have developed novel mass spectrometry high-throughput technologies forthe precise assessment of lipidomes enabled by advanced mass spectrometry, automationand software tools. We are now making another big leap forward by further advancing theframeworks towards accurate quantification and standardization. We highly anticipate that thiswill release the current handbrakes and trigger the awakening of the true potential of lipidomics.
