Policy Advocacy: Climate Change, ES-5750, section A, 1-credit
Learn How to Take Effective Action on Climate Change
The United Nations Secretary-General called the 6th Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report “an ear-splitting wake-up call to the world. It confirms that climate change is running faster than we are – and we are running out of time” (United Nations Secretary General, 2018). But how do individuals take action beyond reducing their own carbon footprint? How can we advocate for the policies that will help solve this global crisis?
This graduate course will provide participants with step-by-step skills in utilizing the tools of democracy to take meaningful civic action on climate change. Participants will learn the levers for building political will and the essentials of climate change communication. Learning will take place through readings, webinars, discussions through videoconferencing and via Antioch’s online learning platform.

In addition to readings and instruction, participants will engage in experiential learning by taking action. Participants will be introduced to environmental organizations that work on climate change and collaborate with them on advocacy, or create an action of their own. Actions can include tabling, giving a presentation, lobbying, organizing a film showing, pursuing an endorsement from a community leader. Other ideas are welcome and should be approved by the course instructors.
Optional: Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) offers a lobbying conference and regional conferences between September and May in various parts of the United States. Participants can join these conferences for climate advocate training and lobbying their members of Congress. Registration will be discounted for all class participants.

Course Schedule
The course will have online meetings on Tuesday evenings from 8:00 - 9:30 pm EDT, August 27 to December 12, The online meetings will be held via Zoom software. Students will find information on participating in these meetings in the course Sakai site. Additional online work will be necessary between sessions to successfully complete the course.
Instructors
Abigail Abrash Walton, PhD is a seasoned mission-aligned change leader, with experience at multiple scales including organizational, municipal, state, federal, and international. She serves as faculty in Antioch University New England’s Department of Environmental Studies, where she directs the master’s programs and the Advocacy for Social Justice and Sustainability master’s degree concentration and co-directs Antioch’s Center for Climate Preparedness and Community Resilience and Conservation Psychology Institute. Clara Fang, MEM, MS, is a doctoral student in the environmental studies program at Antioch University New England and the Higher Education Outreach Director of Citizens' Climate Lobby, a nonprofit organization that builds political will for climate solutions. Clara has also worked as Sustainability Manager at Towson University and Swarthmore College. She holds a Master of Environmental Management from the Yale University, an MFA in Creative Writing from University of Utah, and a BA in English from Smith College. She lives in Detroit, Michigan.
Graduate Credit
This course is offered for 1-credit of graduate education. This course is appropriate to current undergraduate students as well as graduate students and post-graduates. Upon successful completion of the course, students may request an official transcript to document the credit.
Transfer Credit
If one is currently enrolled at another school, an Antioch University official transcript maybe sent directly to the current school's registrars office to request transfer credit. Contact your current college for requirements.
Cancellation and Refunds
Non-matriculated students – requests for cancellations and requests to withdraw from the course that are received in writing 2-days or more before the course starts will be eligible for a full refund. Requests made less than 2-days before the course starts are not eligible for any refund.
