NU Writers' Week: Writing/Righting the World

Calling all Boston writing enthusiasts: activists, residents, professionals, entrepreneurs, scholars, youth, local networks, non-profits, etc. Join us for a  week-long celebration to connect Boston’s writing community, to celebrate the power of words, and to recognize writers’ ability to right the wrongs of the world with a stroke of a pen or the tap of a key. These interactive events will feature a panel discussion, social mixer, master class, op-ed workshop, and an all-day write-in event from a social justice lens.

Writing /Righting the World: Panel Discussion & Social Mixer

• Monday | 6:00 - 8:00 PM
• Calling all Boston writing enthusiasts: activists, residents, entrepreneurs, local groups and networks, non-profit organizations, professionals, scholars and youth to join us for a unique kick-off mixer to connect the Boston’s writing community, celebrate the power of words, and recognize their ability to right the wrongs of the world with stroke of a pen or the tap of a key. In addition to the mixer, award-winning poet and Northeastern Alumna Ashley-Rose Salomon will moderate a dynamic panel discussion on writing to change the world featuring Joely Barrios, Cagen Luse, Candace McDuffey, Yawu Miller, and Cara Solomon.

Revamp Your Career Advancing Tools

• Tuesday | 6:00 - 7:30 PM
• Join us for a resume, CV, LinkedIn and cover letter writing workshop presented by The Northeastern Writing Center, Cecilia Akuffo (NU Human Resources Management) and Amanda Cornwall (NU Career Development). The first half of this session will be a presentation answering common formatting and content questions with examples. Additionally, we will cover tone, word choice, and cohesion. For the second half of this workshop, come prepared to work on your own resumes or cover letters from any point in the writing process. Participants are also invited to bring samples of desired job ads/descriptions. Consultants will be available to work with you and answer questions. This event is free and open to the public. 

• Wednesday | 6:00 - 7:30 PM
• Join us for an advocacy writing workshop presented by Sebastian Stockman and Laurie Edwards. In a panel discussion, presenters will share their own experiences with the why and how of op-eds. Participants will learn strategies for developing their own op-ed pieces, have the opportunity to workshop their pieces, and participate in Q&A.
  

Master Class: Writing About the Self

• Thursday | 6:00 - 7:30 PM
• In this creative workshop, participants will learn ways to write about themselves in poignant, thoughtful, and ethically responsible ways. James Chase Sanchez, Ph.D. will guide participants through first finding personal stories that have an appeal for a wider audience and then will detail the various writing strategies that participants might take to share their stories. In the end, Dr. Sanchez will discuss the ethics surrounding writing about the self—including issues of remembering correctly and reconciling the past—and how to hold ourselves accountable for the stories we tell.

Slam Poetry Workshop & Open Mic

• Friday | 6:00 - 7:30 PM
• Join us for an evening of interactive slam poetry workshop led by Interrobang Poets featuring slam poetry performances and an open mic.

One Day, One Goal

• Saturday | 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
• Bring any writing project to a five-hour writing event. Stay as long as you like and consult with Northeastern Writing Center tutors throughout the day.
