Speaker Bio:

Wendy Key is a licensed Professional Geologist (CA, WA) and Certified Environmental Manager (NV) with 16 years of experience in variety of environmental projects in both the public and private sectors. Wendy conducts environmental compliance assessments and audits to assist businesses looking to achieve and maintain compliance with state and federal regulations. Wendy also provides support to companies with regulatory issues/violations and businesses seeking assistance with agency interaction, strategy, and litigation support/risk reduction.

Wendy joined Geosyntec Consultants over 10 years ago and after 12 years in consulting (6 years at Geosyntec and 6 years at other firms), Wendy took a break and joined the “client-side” becoming an Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager for an international telecommunications company.  During this time, Wendy gained industry management experience leading California environmental compliance programs and health & safety programs for a Fortune 500 company.  After 3 years on the client-side, Wendy returned to Geosyntec and has been applying (and sharing!) what she has learned on both sides of the client-consultant relationship.

Speaker Abstract:

In this presentation, we’ll take a look at what makes a good consultant and what makes a good client by looking at both roles from their own vantage point.  As a consultant, I was shocked to learn that clients saw us as a necessary nuisance. As a client, I was blown away by how arrogant consultants could be.  And yet, we were all working towards the same objective- in the end, regardless of which “side” you’re on, we all want the client to be happy.  We’ll take some time to acknowledge the frustrations felt on both sides, work to improve our understanding of the pressures each role faces in their respective industries, look at the Top 10 things clients wish consultants knew and the Top 10 things consultants wish clients knew, and conclude by taking a look at some tips for how we can all start working together on the same side.
