INCOSE-LA March 12 Speaker Meeting
Integrating System Engineering at John Deere
Robert “Rob” L. Day,  John Deere Systems Engineering Enterprise Lead

ABSTRACT:  John Deere manufactures agricultural, construction, and forestry machinery, diesel engines, drivetrains (axles, transmissions, gearboxes) used in heavy equipment, and lawn care equipment. Disruptive technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning will cause a profound transformation in next decade, as the company moves from “Big Iron” to “Smart Iron” to “Intelligent Iron”. To address these changes, the John Deere Enterprise System Engineering (ESE) initiative was started in 2015 with three specific areas of focus: Innovation, Distinctive Product Quality, and Productivity.

In this presentation, Mr. Day will share insights and lessons learned regarding the adoption of System Engineering at John Deere and the transition from a 182-year history of component-based, document-centric product development. The presentation will provide useful insights into the value of moving an organization to a system-based, model-centric culture.  While the journey has be challenging, intense, and sometimes frustrating, Deere has already seen improvements in product development efficiencies, improved quality, and the ability to innovate.  Mr. Day believes that companies that embrace system engineering will be leaders in their respective markets for years to come; those that don’t will wither and die.

BIOGRAPHY: Rob leads the John Deere Enterprise Systems Engineering adoption efforts, where he helps sets strategic direction, develops Systems Engineering methods and tools, and provides training and support to practitioners.  His responsibility also includes managing academic relationships and programs with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and California Technical Institute (Caltech) and maintaining a relationship with INCOSE, to keep up to date on Systems Engineering developments and provide input to guide the System Engineering initiative though out John Deere.

Rob Day has over 32 years’ experience in System Engineering, System Architecture, System Analysis, Product Design, Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma, Quality Management, Operations Management, and Project Management. Since joining John Deere in 1998, Rob has held increasingly responsible leadership positions in System Engineering, Product Design, Quality Engineering, Six Sigma services, and Test Engineering.

Prior to joining John Deere, Rob worked at Hamilton Sundstrand (Formerly Sundstrand Aerospace), a division of UTC, in Rockford, Illinois for 12 years prior to joining Deere where he held both Design, Test, Systems Engineering, and Leadership positions. He holds a degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, Graduate Certificates from both Caltech and MIT in Systems Engineering & Management, and is an ASQ certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt as well as John Deere Certified DFSS Master Black Belt.
