Abstract: Effecting a positive patient-outcome is a complex problem.  The medical device and pharmaceutical industries make considerations for how to incorporate technology transfers, new formulations and re-formulations, stability parameters, manufacturability, product placement, hospital systems, and home use.  System engineering is a discipline that focuses on solving the problem of complexity, whether for Apollo 11 or for a medical product as simple as a epipen.  In fact, US and international regulations on these product require many aspects of systems engineering be applied, though not always named.  We can ask the right questions and tailor best practices from traditional systems engineering to the medical space. This presentation will discuss the application and tailoring of systems engineering to the "non-traditional" field of medicine.

BiographySteven W. Badelt, PhD. is a seasoned expert in product development, engineering management, business development, and systems engineering.  He has over 20 years of experience in the design and launch of combination products and medical devices, including mechanical auto injectors, electromechanical patch injectors, and insulin-pumps. 

Steve holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, an MS in Biomedical Engineering from UCLA, and a PhD in Neuroengineering from UCLA.  He has been awarded multiple awards for writing business plans (Tech Coast Angels), research (Yahoo!, The Smithsonian), and leadership (Carnegie Mellon, industry).  Steve presently owns or is a managing member of three corporations, including the consulting firm Suttons Creek, Inc.  He is Managing Principal of the biotech consulting firm Suttons Creek, Inc. and he is an advisory board member for the Los Angeles-based Greenwings seed-capital investment fund.  Steve is also an Industry Ambassador for the Healthcare Working Group at INCOSE, the International Council on Systems Engineering.
