Carruthers & Roth, P.A. is pleased to announce our annual 2017 Business & Tax Seminar taking place on Wednesday, December 6, 2017. This full-day seminar, designed for CPAs, accounting and tax professionals, will focus on key issues, policies and requirements related to their profession.
Objectives
Upon completion of the 2017 Business & Tax Seminar, attendees will be able to:
- Summarize recent developments in employment law, including Industrial Commission assessments for failure to maintain workers compensation insurance coverage; the NC Employee Fair Classification Act; use of the new I-9 form; Department of Labor enforcement of E-Verify obligations; “Misconduct” as construed by the Division of Employment Security for purposes of disqualification for unemployment benefits; and application of the FMLA and ADA to employee leave issues.
- Assess issues and options facing small employers in providing health insurance benefits to employees, including the new Qualified Small Employer Health Reimbursement Arrangement.
- Identify and address various tax and non-tax issues, many of which are often overlooked, that need to be addressed in an estate plan.
- Distinguish between popular methods for gifting to minors, including UTMA accounts, 2503(c) trusts, and 529 plan accounts.
- Identify the important estate planning benefits of education trusts and 529 Plans, while recognizing planning opportunities for donors looking to balance tax savings, asset protection, and flexibility.
- Summarize the key characteristics of the generations along with some historical events that helped to shape the behavior of each group.
- Implement methods to mentor and train different generations so retention and productivity can be maximized in the workplace.
- Recognize your legal and practical duties related to pre-litigation communications with third parties regarding former clients and former employers.
- Recognize your legal duties and practical considerations in responding to requests for production of documents for litigation involving former clients, former employers, current clients and current employer.
- Prepare and give deposition and trial testimony for litigation involving former clients, former employers, current clients and current employer.
- Assess which documents or information may be protected from disclosure during the litigation process.
- Identify important tax and non-tax issues in business acquisition agreements, including key representations and warranties, indemnity provisions, restrictive covenants, and purchase price allocation provisions, and discuss ways to protect your client’s rights and interests in those agreements from both the buyer’s and seller’s perspectives.
- Identifying the issues associated with administering the decedent’s debits and creditor claims.
- Identify federal tax developments over the last year as they may impact your client's or employer's tax returns.
Recommended CPE Credit
