2017 Vermont Family Network Annual Conference Transition-Age Youth Strand Registration

This year’s conference theme is “High Hopes & Great Expectations” and we are excited to have Alix Generous as our keynote speaker. This day-long conference hosts more than 300 attendees and 35 exhibitors.  Our Transition-Age Youth Strand will offer 3 workshops throughout the day that will focus on the needs of this population (youth with special needs ages 14-26) and the people who support them.

Workshop Descriptions:

Students registering for the Transition-Age Youth Strand will pay a reduced registration fee of $25 to attend all three transition workshops (see descriptions below). Registration for these workshops is limited.  If you are not a transition-age youth with special needs ages14-26 or would prefer to attend only part of the strand, you are asked to pay the full registration fee, and should register for the conference here.

1. Disability Disclosure:  What Youth Need to Know

How important is it to disclose a disability and how does it help you get the "reasonable accommodations" in the workplace and in school?  Youth will be introduced to this topic using the framework of the guide, The 411 on Disability Disclosure: A Workbook for Youth with Disabilities.  Attendees will learn the importance of better understanding how disclosing their disability could improve educational, employment, and social opportunities.

Presenters:  Pam Gowland and Eric Johnson, Transition Counselors, Vocational Rehabilitation Vermont

2. Calling all Youth!  Hear the Inspiring Stories from Young Adults who Turned Their Dreams into Reality

What does it take to have a successful transition from high school to postsecondary or employment?  A panel of young Vermonters will share their transition tips and stories, exploring the important topics ranging from IEP transition plans, postsecontdary paths, the world of employment, independent living, and the agencies and resources that helped them along the way.  These successful young adults will share what helped, what hurt, and what is really making a difference in their adult life.  Come hear from other peers who raised their aspirations, faced their challenges head on, and succeeded!

Presenters:  Martha Frank, Family Support Consultant, Vermont Family Network, and a panel of transition-age youth

3. Our Kids:  Dreamers, Champions, and Visionaries

In students' own voice and visuals, hear from Vermonters on how they envision their path, what they have to offer, what they dream, and how they learn.  Several Vermont teenage students took the challenge to share their strengths and passions with adults through self-made videos.  We'll take a look at each video and reflect on ways in which we can support each student in our schools and programs.  It takes an open mind and a flexible pathway to help our students shine.

Presenter: Cathy Printon, Family Program Coordinator, VSAC GEAR UP
