Professor Po-Shen Loh
Renowned Carnegie Mellon University math professor, Po-Shen Loh, will be conducting a presentation on behalf of Orange County Math Circle. Come join us and be inspired by an engaging and brilliant mathematician!

Title: Probability
Abstract: As one of the most mysterious subjects in mathematics (and indeed, philosophy), probability is the source of infamous apparent-paradoxes and gems. We’ll discuss some of these, inspired by problems encountered in the 2014 edition of the Putnam Seminar at Carnegie Mellon University.
Audience: Anyone who has been exposed to the nuances of probability. This includes high school students, enthusiastic middle school students, as well as highly advanced or precocious elementary school students.
Prerequisite: There are no prerequisite math levels. All you need to attend is a strong enthusiasm to learn from a brilliant mathematician! And perhaps a pencil and paper.

Speaker Bio:
As the national lead coach of the USA International Math Olympiad team (which received 2nd place in the 2014 IMO with 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal), a MOP instructor since 2002, and a silver medalist in the 1999 IMO, Professor Loh works to connect the worlds of school math and research in his spare time. Currently a math professor at Carnegie Mellon University, he received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Princeton University and his B.S. with Honor in Mathematics from Caltech. At CMU, Prof. Loh studies a variety of questions that lie at the intersection of combinatorics (the study of discrete systems), probability theory, and computer science. He has spoken internationally, in math circles and schools from all over the world: New York, Los Angeles, Germany, Poland, Canada, Korea, and Japan.
In addition to leading the national Math Olympiad effort, Prof. Loh co-founded a free and open crowd-sourced platform expii.com (combining elements of Wikipedia, Khan Academy, and Quora), which enables students and educators worldwide to share and collectively refine interactive lessons. The lessons are then playable by any student anywhere in the world, thereby scaling the adaptive educational experience which has historically been restricted by the localized availability of a skilled human teacher.
