Preparing Our Students for the Real World:
Are We Doing Enough?

Employers are losing faith that our colleges are preparing students adequately for the challenges of a global economy.

In a recent survey, about 80 percent of employers said they expect new hires to connect classroom learning with on-the-job requirements and the realities of today’s workplace.  They also said:  that is not happening these days.

What exactly are employers expecting from new recruits?  Why is experiential learning showing promise in making college grads more competitive?  What can you do to jumpstart employability right now—before your students graduate?

Hear the latest research, find out why Disney and other companies are offering internships to address this problem, and discover new ways to incorporate experiential learning practices into your higher ed classroom at this AAFCS educational webinar (1.5 PDUs):

Preparing Our Students for the Real World:

Are We Doing Enough?

Employers aren’t the only ones who are demanding more from higher ed. Students—and their parents—are taking a hard look these days at the ROI of a college education.  They expect to exit with more than a sheepskin—they expect to be employable.

To obtain jobs, graduates need to be proficient in a wide range of areas—from critical thinking and other “soft” skills to key competencies in the “hard” skills.  Evidence is building that experiential learning can fill the current skills “gap” and boost employability of our students…..as well as the value of a college education.

The focus of this webinar is to examine current best practices for awarding credit through experiential learning in higher education.  Registrants will have a firsthand look at how these best practices have been applied to actual experiential learning courses within the family and consumer sciences curriculum.

A review of the literature on what employers are expecting from college graduates will be presented by two educators who interact regularly with employers and analyze emerging trends to understand the expectations in today’s workplace and what higher ed needs to do to meet those needs.

In just 90 minutes, you will expand your knowledge on:

  • Applicable results from the Hart Research Overview and how it can guide your programs
  • Simple steps you can take to provide experiential opportunities, plus the do’s and don’t
  • How global experience can make your students more competitive in the job market
  • The specific skills necessary for the workplace according to U.S. Department of Labor SCANS Report
  • Essential learning goals identified by the Association of American Colleges and Universities
  • Why programs such as EIU/FCS Disney College Program, American Hospitality Academy, and Study Abroad are examples of premier experiential learning opportunities for credit

As the presenters will explain, many educators do not take internships and similar programs seriously—believing that they lack academic rigor.  Learn why this is not true, and, moreover, how they can be measured.

Successful FCS programs must provide experiential learning opportunities for credit to help students compete effectively in our global economy.  We now know that it is a path to success in the job market…and so do students are their parents.

After this webinar, you will know how to find or propose experiential programs, how to screen available programs, where to go for additional resources, how to incorporate FCS national standards, and how to demonstrate the transferrable employment skills.

Employers are raising the bar for new hires.  Spend 90 minutes with these two experts to help ensure that your students will measure up.
