We know that literacy is a critical life skill….one that contributes to success in academics and employment.

But thanks to the recent explosion in brain research, we are learning that it is no longer only about getting good grades or graduating from high school.

Literacy has a profound effect on healthy development and family dynamics across the life span.

Learn about the complex interrelationship of brain development, language, and literacy and how parenting—and child care—needs to change. Register now for this AAFCS educational webinar (1.5 PDUs):

Neuroscience has shed new light on the range of ways that language and literacy can influence an individual’s social, emotional, and cognitive development, as well as school readiness….and why reading to infants and children needs to be one of the highest priorities in parenting and caregiving.

The stimulation that reading provides can affect all aspects of a child’s health and development.

This webinar will review the critical connections being made between literacy and many of the social problems faced in our schools and communities today—child abuse, crime, bullying, substance abuse, economic hardship—as well as dropping out of school.

And it will provide strategies to help ensure that every child is given the best possible start in life.

In just 90 minutes, you will discover:

  • New research on brain development from birth to age 3
  • The vital role books play in early development
  • A set of behaviors that parents and providers need to be taught
  • The connection between infant mental health and the development of language
  • A medical model of pediatric literacy intervention
  • Recommendations for practice, programming, and curriculum
  • 7 magic words to use with babies and young children
  • 50 ways that books benefit babies

This highly focused webinar will offer tips on how to choose books, how to deal with the significant differences across cultural and economic boundaries, and how technology and screen time come into play in virtually every household, daycare facility, and classroom.

How do you respond to these reasons for not reading?

“We have no books in our home.”

“We have no time to read.”

“It’s the school’s job to teach reading.”

Misconceptions abound when it comes to reading and language development.  Although reading to young children is a bedtime ritual in some families, most parents—even those who do read to their kids—are not aware of the growing recognition in research of the effect of early language development throughout a person’s lifespan.

Learn how to frame the issue differently for parents….in terms of their goals, hopes, and dreams for their child.

What support can communities provide?
Many well-meaning communities provide books to low-income families.  After this webinar, you will understand why this approach often fails…and what can be done at the community level.

In general, people understand the economic impact of literacy, but they are not aware of the powerful influence it has on the overall well-being of individuals, families, and communities.  Register now and discover how you can help them see the bigger picture.
