Beyond PowerPoint - New Web 2.0 Technology for the FCS Classroom

The digital age has brought us amazing new teaching tools….and the social, collaborative aspects of Web 2.0 are transforming classrooms everywhere, particularly in family and consumer sciences.

We all know it is imperative that teachers keep up with these next generation technologies…or they and their students will be left behind. Yet we have little time to surf the web on our own.

Technology workshops and conferences can easily leave us feeling overwhelmed instead of empowered.  Frustrated instead of inspired. Join us for a different kind of technology education experience—one that will give you easy-to-implement ideas for the FCS classroom….in just 90 minutes.

Register now for this one-of-a-kind webinar (1.5 PDUs) for a refreshing, focused look at selected free tools:

FCS teachers are uncovering many free Web 2.0 technologies and here is what they are finding:

  • They offer students fresh and engaging approaches to demonstrating their mastery of competencies
  • FCS courses lend themselves well to researching real life decisions online
  • Web 2.0 offers a wealth of online games that reinforce our content and allow students to apply classroom learning
  • FCS teacher and expert trainer Tracey Newman has selected three of the best, free Web 2.0 tools she has found with wide application for FCS content.  In step-by-step fashion, she will guide you through the implementation of these three technologies.  And for those who are more comfortable exploring Web 2.0, she will highlight nine others that she has found valuable for the FCS classroom.

In this 90-minute program including Q&A, you will explore:

  • Wallwisher—a virtual sticky note tool for a fun way to collaborate and brainstorm
  • Prezi—a presentation program that is much more powerful than PowerPoint
  • Voki—a tool that uses a simple, talking avatar to illustrate a concept
  • Additional technologies including more advanced tools for further exploration
  • Examples, actual screenshots, and ideas on how to incorporate these technologies into your existing curriculum
  • Management techniques such as how to have students turn work in digitally, how to prevent technology failure, and what to do if it still fails
  • Links to step-by-step directions and other resources for additional support

The goal of this webinar is simple:  you will understand how to successfully utilize at least three new tools that will enhance and compliment your current instructional activities! Plus, you will be familiar with nine additional tools, including Bubbl.us, Wikispaces, and PollEverywhere.

Technology in the classroom can add a great deal in student engagement, and, most importantly, the tools you will learn about can be used to align with your teaching and learning goals.  (You likely will find Web 2.0 tools you want to use in your personal life, too!)

Web 2.0 offers sharing, collaboration, creativity, building relationships, and authenticity—many of the hallmarks of an FCS classroom.

Register now and learn how to connect your classroom to the world.

Who should register?   Educators, particularly in FCS, in grades 6-12 who want to integrate free Web 2.0 technologies into their daily lessons.   Beginners are welcome!

About the Presenter:

Tracey Newman, M.A., A nationally board certified FCS teacher at a Missouri high school has more than 20 years of experience. She had been adding small doses of technology to her FCS courses, but that exploded once she received a grant for a classroom set of Netbooks.  She will soon be integrating iPads into her classroom thanks to another grant. She has been a Master Educator with the Family Economics Financial Education (FEFE) project since 2007, with a focus on integrating technology in the classroom.  A frequent presenter, she has shared her skills in technology integration in the FCS classroom with the South Dakota Department of Education and with ACTE.  With another FEFE Master Educator, she developed the Technology Integration Tools feature as a part of the FEFE curriculum and is in the process of expanding that curriculum option for teachers and developing a similar component that highlights apps available to support financial education.
