Just when children are in the formative years for developing their self-concept, gender awareness, and stereotypes, there are too few males around. In fact, male involvement in parenting, education, and in programs that serve children is scant.
And it is in everyone’s best interests to close this gap.
Children are the greatest beneficiaries of having more male role models—especially those who don’t have an engaged father at home. Women benefit as well: having dad more involved may reduce the stress on mom. (But women resist this--learn why.)

About the presenter: Mikki Meadows, PhD, has a master’s degree in FCS and a doctorate in early childhood education. She teaches at Eastern Illinois University and is coordinator of the School of Family & Consumer Sciences Infant and Child Development Laboratories. She has been active in research in the area of male involvement along with her colleague Jill Bowers. Their latest research has provided unexpected insights into what men say they need to feel supported in their roles as fathers, and in working professionally with children and families.
