Encouraging Male Involvement in Early Childhood, Parenting and FCS

Just when children are in the formative years for developing their self-concept, gender awareness, and stereotypes, there are too few males around. In fact, male involvement in parenting, education, and in programs that serve children is scant.

And it is in everyone’s best interests to close this gap.

Children are the greatest beneficiaries of having more male role models—especially those who don’t have an engaged father at home.  Women benefit as well:  having dad more involved may reduce the stress on mom. (But women resist this--learn why.)

Professions such as early childhood and family and consumer sciences would unquestionably be enriched by having more males. Administrators and employers have long known that a reasonable gender balance enhances the workplace, yet those in female-dominated departments, schools, or organizations are often at a loss as to how to attract more men and support those who do venture in.

This webinar will reveal the results of the presenter’s current research that backs-up these claims, offers surprising insights, and provides specific strategies for addressing this huge gender divide that is serving no one, and indeed, may be harmful to young children.

In just 90 minutes, you will learn dozens of effective techniques for encouraging male involvement both in the family and as professionals in the field while updating your knowledge on:

  • The key differences in male/female interactions with children
  • New (2010) research related to the importance of male involvement in the lives of young children
  • Roadblocks that are preventing males from entering the professions or being more engaged at home
  • How to address common stereotypes regarding male interaction with young children
  • Why females are unwittingly serving as “gatekeepers” to male involvement—both in the family and professionally…and what to do about it

From birth to age 8, most children are missing out on an important dimension to their growth and development.  Learn how exposure to different personality types and styles is better for children, giving them essential life skills.

How Men Benefit From More Involvement?

By learning how to be an engaged father, men will feel more connected.  In many families today, dad is the playmate and mom sets the rules. In this scenario, dads are not full participants.

Men may be losing out in the professions as well because of social barriers, stigma, and the lack of role models. Because there aren’t many males working in these fields, men have few role models and often shy away from rewarding careers in early childhood or FCS.

This webinar will show you how to support those men who do enter these fields and how to proactively reach out to others and make them feel welcomed.

If You Work With Families, This Webinar is a Must!

You will learn how to approach this sometimes sensitive topic in non-threatening ways while raising awareness of the need for—and benefits of—male involvement.

About the presenter:  Mikki Meadows, PhD, has a master’s degree in FCS and a doctorate in early childhood education.  She teaches at Eastern Illinois University and is coordinator of the School of Family & Consumer Sciences Infant and Child Development Laboratories.  She has been active in research in the area of male involvement along with her colleague Jill Bowers.  Their latest research has provided unexpected insights into what men say they need to feel supported in their roles as fathers, and in working professionally with children and families.

Who should register?

This webinar is ideal for all FCS professionals and anyone working with young children and families, those who plan programming for family involvement, and employers or others who train staff.
