“HIPAA Data Breaches: What's Trending in 2016”
In 2016, the healthcare industry has seen approximately 215 large-scale data breaches, which has impacted about 14 million individuals. In addition, we have seen the most active year of HIPAA Enforcement from the Office of Civil Rights. On top of the increase in enforcement and a continued trend of data breaches, the HIPAA audits have focused on Breach Notification and the processes of an organization. This presentation will focus on dissecting the data breaches that are occurring in 2016 and looking at lessons learned from organizations impacted by data breaches. The presentation will also focus on discussing best practices for preventing HIPAA data breaches within organizations. People attending the presentation will understand current risks to healthcare organizations, key steps to prevent data breaches from happening, and important steps in the breach investigation processes.
SPEAKER BIO:
Danika Brinda, PhD, RHIA, CHPS, HCISPP is an Associate Professor in Health Informatics and Information Management at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn where she teaches a variety of classes in Medico-legal, Electronic Health Records, and Health Informatics. She is also the CEO of TriPoint Healthcare Solutions, which focus on helping organizations create and implement sustainable HIPAA Compliance Programs. Dr. Brinda is an expert in all aspects of healthcare privacy and security and has helped many organizations operationalize and implement compliant HIPAA practices. She served for 3 years on the Regional Extension Product for Minnesota and North Dakota (REACH) Grant with The College of St. Scholastica, acting as the Subject Matter Expert for HIPAA Privacy and Security as well as the Minnesota Health Record Act. Dr. Brinda serves as a national speaker and author on many topics related to healthcare privacy and security. She recently authored "Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security Exam Preparation" Book through the American Health Information Management Association.
