Rev. Steve Johnson, Ph.D.
Pastor of Care and Counseling
Valley Community Baptist Church, Avon

Caring for those experiencing traumatic loss involves thinking, speaking, and acting in various combinations at different times. This workshop will explore some simple, loving, and very practical ways to care for those who are hurting to the depths of their being. It will offer attendees an optional opportunity to practice some of these ways in a safe, supportive environment.

E. Healing the Heart of the Helper: Addressing and Transforming Vicarious Trauma- How to get
     help, when to get help
Steven Brown, Psy.D.; Director, Traumatic Stress Institute
Patricia Wilcox, LCSW; Vice President, Klingberg Family Centers

Dr. Rachel Remen writes, "The expectation that we can be immersed in suffering and loss daily and not be touched by it is unrealistic as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting
wet." To be a healing presence, helpers must attend to being whole themselves. This workshop will discuss the negative effects of vicarious trauma on helpers, where it comes from, and how to address and transform it to remain an effective helper.
