Fundamentals of Leading and Managing Projects

Center for Project Management

Your Presenter

Dennis Lucarelli, PMP

Workshop Overview

This workshop provides foundational learning in what it takes to manage projects successfully. Instruction is focused on application of a tested, proven, and repeatable process for managing projects from concept to successful delivery.

The hallmark of this workshop is its practical, hands-on instruction. The workshop is highly interactive, offering classroom exercises for each major topic. Work is guided by a series of templates that are used not only in the classroom, but are an essential element in deployment and use of the presented best known methods in the workplace.

The “take-away” content of this workshop is high. Students will not only understand the principles and practices that make for successful projects, they will know how to apply those principles and practices in the workplace.

Learning Objectives

  • Explore the difference between project and operational work, project roles and responsibilities and the classic constraints that every project navigates
  • Learn how and practice creating a project charter that provides a clear and compelling case for investment in the project opportunity
  • Learn how and practice creating a detailed project plan including a work breakdown structure, risk management plan, stakeholder engagement plan, communication plan and more
  • Learn an innovative technique for systematically assessing a project's complexity
  • Participate in a demonstration for creating defensible and realistic project estimates using innovative techniques that factor constraints including a team member's skill level, work interruption and other factors that often impact a task's actual duration
  • Learn how to build a professional grade project schedule and view a demonstration featuring project scheduling software
  • Learn how to lead a temporary project team that is often dotted-line reporting to the project manager, partially assigned and highly stressed
  • Learn how to manage-up and influence your project sponsor
  • Learn techniques for effective, concise and accurate project status reporting
  • Explore how to conclude a project in a thorough yet efficient manner to ensure lessons are captured and carried forward to future project teams

Additional workshop take-aways include a robust, project management toolkit designed as a complete job aide for immediate, practical application back in the work environment
