MEMSPA Executive Director, Paul Liabenow & Associate Director, Doni St. Amour Present:

Trauma Informed Instruction & Social Emotional Learning:

The WHY, WHAT & HOW

A trauma-sensitive school is a safe and respectful environment that enables students to build caring relationships with adults and peers, self-regulate their emotions and behaviors, and succeed academically, while supporting their physical health and well-being.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) encompasses skills and attitudes that support students in school and in life. It is also the process by which students and caring adults; including building leaders, teachers, coaches, counselors, and, parents, develop these same skills and the process. Allowing educators to integrate social emotional learning into the fabric of the school community.

Educators agree that it is the responsibility of schools to prepare students to become knowledgeable, responsible, caring adults. Most educators enter the profession with a belief that education should develop the whole child, including their social and emotional development, but the direction of education in the past few decades has shifted into a focus on test scores and the development of technical skills to the exclusion of the whole person.

Attend this interactive research support session to take a deep dive into the Why, What and How of Social Emotional Learning, Mindfulness & Trauma informed instruction. Session Attendees will explore and discuss current SEL trends, programs, and potential models for planning and implementation, and program assessment.

*Attendees will need a laptop for the session

“The relationship between the teacher and the student, and the extent to which that relationship nurtures the longing of the child to matter in the world, and the longing of the teacher to nurture and fulfill that desire is the essence of education.”
Shriver and Buffett (2015)
