LOCAL FOOD: Security and Culture

The discussion of local food means more than boutique groceries and a nod to a long lost past.  Local food is recognized at all levels as a critical measure of community health.  Access by all populations to diverse and nutrient rich produce is a growing concern.  At the same time, local food can be a vibrant contributor to community and culture.

Join us for our next City Club forum, as Katrina Van Dis (COIC, CO Food Policy Council) and Chef Gene Fritz (Director and Executive Chef of the COCC Culinary Institute) discuss food security in Central Oregon and the role local food can play as a cultural identifier.

Katrina (Katy) Van Dis works at Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council as a Program Coordinator for the Community and Economic Development Natural Resource Department.  She grew up on a cherry orchard in Eastern Oregon, and as a kid, sold cherries on the side of the road to help fund her college tuition.  She is on the Board of Directors for the Oregon Farmers’ Market Association and has worked extensively in Central Oregon with marketing and outreach program focused on local food.

Chef Gene Fritz is Director and Executive Chef of the COCC Culinary Institute.
