THE CLASS offers a smorgasboard of information ranging from a demonstration of dynamic cabling installation, tree ID, tree risk before climbing and, of course, the always popular pruning session with Dr. Ed Gilman. New this year, learn about proper crane use in the tree care industry and related equipment inspections and worker safety.

Mr. Bill Armstrong - Armstrong Tree Service
Bill will describe the process of installing a dynamic cabling system, assisted by arborists Tim Walters and Bryan Wilson of Miller’s Tree Service. Cabling equipment provided by Miller’s Tree Service.

Mr. Stan Rosenthal - UF/IFAS Leon County Extension
Join Stan for an informative session as he covers the basics of tree ID.

11:00    Going Out On A Limb?
Mr. Norm Easey - Consulting Arborist   
Norm will discuss risk assessment for arborists BEFORE climbing a tree; learn how to determine if it appears safe to “go out on a limb”.

Assisted by Ron Price, Mike will outlin

the different methods of proper strapping and will demonstrate varyious ways to set the straps up to achieve desired effects while causing minimal shock to both  the tree and the load line. He will go over the proper means of using the crane to hoist a climber into the tree, the proper inspection of the crane before starting work, and the proper hand signals to use when working with a crane or boom truck.

1:15    Structural Pruning with Ed Gilman
Dr. Ed Gilman - UF/IFAS, Environmental Horticulture
Dr. Gilman will  teach structural pruning and how to correct or prevent problems such as co-dominant trunks and included bark. Learn the three pruning cuts and which is most appropriate for young trees and mature trees.  Learn how to minimize pest problems and decay with the correct location of your pruning cut.

Bill Armstrong
Armstrong Tree Service
Bill Armstrong received degrees from Florida State University and the University of Florida. Bill started Armstrong Tree Service in Tallahassee, FL in 1991. His company has participated in past Chapter events such as the Florida TCC and the Loren Westenberger Workday.

Norm Easey
Urban Forester
Norm Easey has been an active member of ISA for 29 years and is a charter member of the Florida Chapter ISA.  He received his bachelors’ degree in Forestry/Resource Management in 1980 from the University of Wisconsin. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Florida Chapter ISA. He also has a part-time urban forestry consulting practice.

Dr. Ed Gilman
UF/IFAS, Environmental Horticulture
  Dr. Gilman has received the prestigious Authors citation award in 1999 from the
  International Society of Arboriculture for his books and CDROMs on trees and landscape
  plants. He has received numerous other awards for his horticultural writing from the
  American Society for Horticultural Science. He received the Gunslogen Award in 2001
  from the American Horticultural Society for his innovative work in developing software for
  the horticultural industry. Dr. Gilman serves the landscape industry and allied professions
  with his tireless teaching and research efforts nationwide.

Michael Hardy
All American Tree Pro & Crane Services
Mike Hardy of All American Tree Pro & Crane Services in Tallahassee, FL. specializes in crane use for tree work and other purposes.

Ron Price
Ron Price will participate in the crane demonstration. Ron has been a tree care worker for many years in the Tallahassee area and has been a Florida TCC competitor for many of the previous competitions.

Stan Rosenthal
UF/IFAS Leon County Extension
Stan received his degree in Forestry from the University of Wisconsin in 1981. He spent 10 years with the Florida Division of Forestry, and as been the Forestry Extension Agent in Leon County for more than 15 years.

Tim Walters
Miller’s Tree Service
Climber Tim Walters will participtate in the cabling demonstration. Tim has climbed in many previous Florida TCC events and will be competing again this year. He is an ISA Certified Arborist and Certified Tree Worker in the Tallahassee area.

Bryan Wilson
Miller’s Tree Service
Climber Bryan Wilson will participate in the cabling demonstration. He is an ISA Certified Arborist in the Tallahassee area.
