Planting Details and Specifications: a National Online Initiative

Dr. Ed Gilman, University of Florida

A team of specialists has developed CAD-ready planting details and specifications for use by landscape architects, engineers, municipalities, and others engaged in the business of planting trees. They are brand new, they are up-to-date,  were reviewed by a national committee, and they are available to you for FREE. Are they right for your operation?

1:15-3:45  AFTERNOON STATION ROTATIONS
(attendees rotate to each station every 45 minutes)

Bark Inclusions, Aspect Ratio, and Union Strength: New Information for Tree Managers
Dr. Ed Gilman, University of Florida
We know that inclusions weaken a union but are we sure that is the largest contributing factor to branch failure?  We split apart 200 unions measuring various attributes including branch angle, inclusions, and branch diameter.  Which was most important? Come see live demonstrations of union strength.

Nursery Production Pruning: Species Management
Lloyd Morgan, Fish Branch Tree Farm
Some trees need little training in the nursery and landscape, others require regular pruning to develop and maintain a dominant leader. Details of nursery production pruning differ by species. Live pruning demonstrations will show you the strategies growers use to make your job as a buyer easy when planting shade trees.

Landscape Pruning: 4 to 10 Inch Trees
Michael Marshall, Marshall Tree Farm
Pruning newly installed or established shade trees ensures the good form developed in the nursery carries over into the established landscape. Neglecting to conduct this important strategy can doom trees to poor form, even when they begin as high quality Florida #1 trees.  Live demonstrations on large trees will showyou which branches to cut and why.

3:45     Award CEUs and adjourn
