Course Description, Objectives and Benefits: An outbreak of an acute infectious disease can occur on any college campus or within a professional, collegiate or amateur sports team. A prompt, comprehensive and coordinated approach is needed to address an outbreak. The webinar will review lessons learned, and best practices from, the external investigation to identify the cause of the August 2016 hospitalization of Texas Woman's University women's volleyball student-athletes who were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. The presenters, Dr. Monica Mendez-Grant, Texas Woman's University vice-president for student affairs, and Michael Buckner, a Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based education and sports law attorney, will discuss what they learned during the TWU rhabdomyolysis investigation to provide guidance to university administrators, general counsel, athletics administrators, leaders of sports leagues/teams/professional franchises and other sports-related professionals on the legal, administrative and compliance implications of investigating and addressing disease outbreaks. Specifically, webinar participants will:

  • Review the initial steps an organization should consider when a disease outbreak occurs
  • Discuss the importance of developing a media and communications strategy
  • Outline the most effective methods to address legal Issues and to investigate the cause of the outbreak
  • Discover the protocols that should be used in working with relevant third-parties (e.g., health departments, FDA) and stakeholders
  • Develop strategies to deal with the post-outbreak environment.
