Managing High Conflict People in the Workplace*

Advanced Training for Professionals

Presented by BIll Eddy, LSCW, JD

Internationally Renowned Speaker, Lawyer, Therapist, Mediator, Author

Have you noticed more people engaging in “high conflict” behavior these days at work? A customer in a store yells loudly at a storeowner or clerk. Someone spits at an officer writing a parking ticket. A co-worker sends nasty emails out to the whole department. An employee seems to get into conflict with co-workers all the time and never takes responsibility for their actions. An employee threatens to hit a co-worker, then claims it was just a joke. A supervisor bullies an employee after the supervisor makes a mistake.

This behavior is considered “high conflict” because it increases conflict instead of reducing or resolving it. Most people with these types of extreme behaviors have a repeated pattern of high-conflict behavior. It’s part of who they are. They didn’t just make a mistake or act out of the blue – they have done this before and will do it again.

High-conflict behavior is characterized by:

  • All-or-nothing thinking
  • Unmanaged emotions
  • Extreme behavior
  • Preoccupation with blaming others
  • Prolonged, unresolved conflict
  • Drawing in many other people
  • Draining energy, time and resources

High Conflict Behavior can very often lead to complaints of workplace harassment or bullying, law suits and serious damage to the workplace. Also, we are seeing high conflict behavior increasing in every setting: in legal disputes, in divorce, between neighbours, among family members, against organizations and government agencies.

Yet, these disputes can generally be managed by understanding high conflict behavior and using skills to manage the dispute that are often different from ordinary conflict resolution methods. Knowing how to manage high conflict behavior and being able to assist those involved to resolve their own dispute is critical for all of us who play a role in managing workplace conflict.

This intensive two-day training will focus on understanding and practicing conflict management skills that are not obvious or natural. These skills will be practiced in small steps in several role-play exercises which involve high-conflict emotions and behavior. Professionals will gain skills and confidence which will assist them in handling high conflict behavior in the workplace and in dispute resolution settings.

The workshop is organized into two days and you can elect to take either Day 1 or both days. Light lunch will be served.

*Those who practice in areas other than workplace will also benefit from this training.

Day 1: Understanding and Managing High Conflict People

This day will focus on understanding high conflict behavior and the paradigm shifts necessary in managing it. It is designed for all professionals who may deal with high conflict behavior including labour relations practitioners, managers, administrators, supervisors, mediators, arbitrators and lawyers.

This day will focus on coaching high conflict people and high conflict mediation skills and processes.  It is specifically designed for those who are called on to play a mediation or coaching role including union representatives, human resources professionals, managers, supervisors as well as professional coaches and dispute resolution practitioners.
