IRS Enrolled Agent Course

Special Enrollment Exam Prep Course -- Summer 2017

This Special Enrollment Exam Test Prep Program is offered by members of the Massachusetts Society of Enrolled Agents at the Bedford Plaza Hotel in Bedford, MA. It is designed to provide students with an in-depth tax education on all relevant tax topics which include, but are not limited to: tax research, representation before the Internal Revenue Service, ethics, individual taxation, partnerships, and corporations. 

Course teaching methods include but are not limited to: classroom lecture, on-line study and testing, and course textbook work.

• The curriculum allows Enrolled Agent candidates the opportunity to review and comprehend the material as well as the exam question format.

• This course, with its weekly assignments and structured presentation, offers a sensible way to prepare for the Special Enrollment Exam. The program format is designed to cover the necessary material in a timely and orderly manner.

• This course is taught by Enrolled Agents who have been through the rigors of the exam and can offer helpful tips to prospective Enrolled Agents. Their extensive tax preparation experience makes the instructors excellent resources for clarifying difficult concepts.

• The breaks built into the course schedule allow candidates to review each part and take the exam part before continuing the program.

IRS CPE Credits

Students attending every class of any part earn IRS CPE credits toward their Annual Filing Season Program commitment.

Part 1 – Nine hours of class time, 5 IRS CE credits

Parts 2A & 2B – Eighteen hours of class time, 5 IRS CE credits

Part 3 – Nine hours of class time, 2 IRS CE credits

Total IRS CPE credits to be earned by students – 12.

Classes are held on Thursday evenings from 6pm to 9pm are organized in four parts. Each part consists of three classes.

Part 1 - Thursdays on June 8, 15, and 22.

Part 2A – Thursdays on July 6, 13, and 20

Part 2B – Thursdays on July 27, August 3 and August 10

Part 3 – Thursdays on August 24, 31, September 7

Part 1 - $350 – Individual Income Tax

Parts 2A & 2B – $700 – Business, Estate, Trust and Non-profit Income Tax

Part 1:    June 8, June 15, June 22

Cathy Capuano, EA & Mason Klinck, EA

 

Cathy Capuano, EA became an enrolled agent in 1996. She has been a tax professional for over 25 years, taught H&R Block courses for 15 years. Cathy currently is a tax research specialist for H&R Block Tax Institute. Her practice spans trust, corporate and individual returns. She is a member of MASEA.

 

Mason Klinck, EA has a broad background in taxation. He has been both a Revenue Agent for the IRS as well as a partnership auditor for the California Franchise Tax Board, with an emphasis on abusive multi-tier tax shelters. In addition, he has worked for law and public accounting firms in taxpayer defense, legal research, tax planning and return preparation. His practice now consists of consulting law and CPA firms as well as taxpayer representation. He has managed VITA sites, and done pro bono work for Low Income Taxpayer Clinics in California and Massachusetts. He has taught in graduate tax programs and published in the technical press. He holds two degrees from Oxford as well as a Master of Science in Taxation and an MBA.

Mary Dupuis, EA & Mark Lawless, EA

 

Mary Dupuis, EA became an Enrolled Agent in 1981. She has been a tax professional for over 30 years, taught H&R Block courses for 15 years and currently teaches the SEE preparation course for MASEA. Mary is a Quality Assurance Analyst for H&R Block personal tax software. She is a member of MASEA.

 

Mark Lawless, EA is the Managing Principal at MBAS – a consulting practice in taxation and taxpayer representation as well as business forecasting and planning. Mark has over 35 years of business experience, having held a range of professional, managerial, executive positions in finance & accounting in multiple industries. Mark holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Economics, a master’s degree in Finance, and a graduate certificate in Accounting. He has served as an adjunct professor of Economics and Finance at several universities. He is a lifetime member of Financial Executives International (FEI), and a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) and of the Massachusetts Society of Enrolled Agents (MASEA). Mark is the 2016 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Forecasting and Planning from the Institute of Business Forecasting and Planning. 

 

Part 2B:  July 27, August 3, August 10

Terry Anderson, EA & Amit Johar, EA

 

Terry Anderson, EA, MST received her EA in 2001 and her MST in 2009. She has been teaching modules of the SEE review course administered by the MASEA for over 10 years; specifically part 2 - sole proprietors, partnerships, corporations, non-profits, and estate and trust taxation. Prior to that she taught an introductory tax course for H&R Block as well as advanced courses. She is currently a member of the MaSEA education committee. She presents on various tax topics at MaSEA meetings and at other venues. During the tax season, in addition to having her own tax practice, she is a tax expert for Intuit's Ask a Tax Expert program.

 

Amit Johar, EA has a tax practice that focuses on tax planning to maximize individual and small business retirement savings. He has a business degree in Finance from Bridgewater State University. He has sold and consulted entrepreneurial start-ups and has experience in the banking industry. He knows the complexities of running a small business focuses his tax practice on small business clients.

 

Part 3:  August 24, August 31, September 7

Beth Logan, EA & Judy Kellogg, EA

 

Beth Logan, EA has a tax practice and consulting company in Chelmsford. She focuses on helping individuals and small businesses. She teaches tax classes to lay persons at various venues. In the lulls between tax seasons, she researches tax topics including attending BitCoin conferences, dialoguing with EAs in states with medical marijuana, discussing annuities with financial planners, and much more. Her other work time is spent helping small businesses grow as a management consultant and advising on financial decisions which can impact their taxes. She has an MBA from the University of Maryland and two engineering degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology.

 

Judith Kellogg, EA owns Special K Tax & Accounting specializing in individual, small business, corporation, trust, and estate tax return preparation. She is an NTPI fellow and is currently a director of the Massachusetts Society of Enrolled Agents (MaSEA) and a member of the National Association of Tax Professionals. She has worked as a corporate controller for Ceverva Networks, Inc., National Transaction Network, Inc. and Computer Telephone Corporation and CFO and Treasurer of Flexwatt Corporation. Judith is currently a seasonal software quality assurance analyst for a large tax preparation software company and has worked as a seasonal tax expert for another software company. She has taught for the Special Enrollment Exam Preparation course and has moderated educational seminars for MaSEA. Judith holds a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Master's of Science in Management from Purdue University specializing in Finance.
