OFIS Workshop - Toronto West - May 31 2017
"Managing Student Stress & Anxiety" - Mike MacConnell - B.A., B.Ed., Acc.F.M., Q.Med

May 31 2017 - 9am-3:30pm - Hitherfield School (Campbellville)
REGISTRATION DEADLINE - May 15 2017!!

Students at all grade levels are experiencing more stress, anxiety. Managing both a student’s level of anxiety and their academic progress can be a challenge even within the smaller learning environments that independent schools can provide.  Pervasive anxiety leads to lower levels of engagement, hindering academic performance and community well-being.

Helping students to manage stress and participate more fully in the learning experience requires a supportive community, a greater understanding of the causes and manifestations of stress and anxiety as well as tools and techniques aimed at helping all stakeholders engage in productive conversation, and meaningful intervention.

Our full day workshops on managing student stress and anxiety (repeated in Toronto West on May 31) will introduce teachers and administrators to key concepts and techniques necessary to assist their students in managing their stress and anxiety.

SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY:
*
Fundamentals of stress and composure (9:00am-10:30am) - This session will introduce educators to the sources and neurology of distress as well as practical exercises that can be used to help students to regain composure and a sense of calm.
*Introduction to mindful practices (10:30am-12:00pm) - Educators will be introduced to the myths and truths of mindfulness and discuss the varieties of practice that exist and when to use them. Once again this session will be highly experiential, introducing educators to the use of mindful breathing, posture and walking as mechanisms for helping students to become of their stressors in an effort to manage their responses to them.
*Awakening emotional awareness: An introduction to Emotional Intelligence (1:00pm-2:00pm) - This session will provide an overview of the essentials of EQ and its benefits in the learning environment. Educators will be led through exercises aimed at self-observation and its connection to self-management and the cultivation of empathy for others.
*The ABCs of conflict resolution (2:00pm-3:30pm) - The final session will introduce the group to practical methods for managing conflict. This highly experiential session will allow participants to practice negotiation and mediation skills, active listening and using the power of curiosity and positive intent to create productive outcomes from conflict situations with the potential to harmful stress and anxiety.

Morning and afternoon breaks, a hot buffet lunch, resources and free parking are all included.
