OFIS Elementary Panel Workshop - GTA - May 8 2017
"Mathematics in Elementary & Middle School" - Ewa Kasinska - OCT Mathematics Educator & Consultant

May 8 2017 - 9am-4pm - North York General Hospital - North York

Along with literacy, numeracy represents one of the core aspects of a solid education. For those interested in careers intechnology, engineering, business and the sciences, numeracy has never been more important. Half of this year’s grade 6 students in Ontario failed to meet provincial standards in mathematics. This is daunting news for both the education sector, but also for the future of the province to remain resilient to a complex and competitive global economy.

Math teachers must employ instructional and assessment tools and techniques that strike a balance between problem-solving and investigation and fundamental skills such as basic addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Math teachers must also be able to teach mathematical concepts in multiple ways so as to effectively engage with a diverse group of learners.

Our Workshops on mathematics will be fantastic opportunity for math teachers in elementary and middleschools (Monday May 8th, 2017) and those in secondary schools (Monday May 8th, 2017) to enhance their approach to instructional design and strengthen student performance in math!

SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY:
*Differentiated instruction in the math (9:00am-10:30am) - Introduction to identifying students' learning styles, and tailoring tools and techniques for greater success
*Numeracy through better assessment (10:30am-12:00pm) - Emphasis will be placed on demonstrating how assessments "as" and"for" learning allow teachers to foster mathematical literacy in their students.
*Effective Communication in math instruction (1:00pm-2:30pm) - Techniques for overcoming obstacles in the quest to make students think, talk and write about mathematical concepts are identified and practical, classroom-ready examples are collaboratively designed and discussed.
*Resources for math teachers (2:30pm-3:30pm) - An exploration of relevant and readily available print and electronicresources for easy classroom adaptation.

Morning and afternoon breaks, a hot buffet lunch, resources and free parking are all included.
