OFIS Spring Learning Day - Toronto West - April 26 2017
"Educational Innovation" - Ryan Burwell - Educational Designer, Facilitator & Consultant

April 26 2017 - 9am-3:30pm - Hitherfield School - Campbellville, ON
REGISTRATION DEADLINE - APRIL 15 2017!!

The world is changing at an unprecedented pace. Upwards of 65% of students entering primary school today are likely to grow up to work in job types that do not currently exist. The educational ecosystem in general continues to look for ways to address this reality. In the absence of a framework, culture and point of view regarding the nature of innovation, our efforts to prepare students for the future are likely to fall short.

There is no quick fix when it comes to strengthening your innovation efforts. Innovation is a continual process of pushingthe boundaries of the educational environment- a continual effort to question and iterate on approaches to teaching and the learning experience. This can only happen when administrators, teachers, and indeed students, come together to think critically about their approach to teaching, leading and learning.

Our Spring Learning Days on innovation in education ( repeated again on Tuesday April 25th, 2017) will introduce teachers and administrators to the tools and ways of thinking necessary to conceptualize and cultivate a culture of innovation across their school community and to practically employ innovative tools in the classroom.

SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY:
*Adopting the innovator’s mindset (9:00am-10:30am) - An introduction to the concepts of innovation and their applicability to the challenge of preparing students for a currently unknown future.
*Growing Success as a tool for innovation (10:30am-12:00pm) - An exploration of specific assessment strategies that encourage self-direction and inquiry. Drawing directly from Growing Success, we will investigate the natural intersection between assessment “for” and “as”learning and the world of innovation. Teachers will be shown how to reframe the value and purpose of assessment for their students and how to design activities that harness the full potential of assessment strategies.
*Problem solving through design thinking (1:00pm-3:30pm) - This highly experiential session would show teachers how to design anddeliver student centred activities that help students engage course content while practicing a wide variety of 21st century skills, including creative problem-solving, collaboration and resilience.

Morning and afternoon breaks, a hot buffet lunch, resources and free parking are all included.
