The League of Women Voters of Florida's League University program is designed to offer specialized training to help students, young professionals and others develop the skills they need to become leaders in their communities.
Participants will learn leadership skills such as: developing a leadership platform, public speaking, fundraising and cultivating donors, and communicating with the media.
Two specialized tracks allow registrants to select the workshops best suited to their interests. Workshops from either track may be combined for a personally customized training experience.
The So, You Want to Run for Office? track is designed to help individuals who are interested in working in politics or are considering running for elected office in the near or distant future.
The workshops offered for this track are:
- Developing Your Platform/Communications: Provides information on how to develop a leadership platform for a political campaign and an overview of effective means of communication through e-mail, print and social media
- Fundraising and Cultivating Donors: Teaches individuals the process of fundraising and cultivating donors for political campaigns, explains different fundraising strategies and provides tips for a successful campaign
- "What I Wish I Knew..." A Panel Discussion with Elected Officials: Features local elected officials in a panel discussion regarding their experiences on the campaign trail and, specifically, what they wish they knew before running for office
The So, You Want to Serve on a Board or Be Politically Active? track is designed to help individuals who are interested in becoming community leaders or advocates.
The workshops offered for this track are:
- Mastering the Message Part I: Successful Public Speaking: Provides an overview of public speaking and techniques to reduce nervousness and anxiety often associated with public speaking
- Mastering the Message Part II: Making the Media Your Friend: Explores the practical application of developing mutually beneficial relationships with members of the media in order to successfully publicize your issues
