Welcome to the Case Management Institute

Homeless services has been transformed significantly in recent years, moving from an emphasis on shelters and transitional housing to a focus on rapid re-housing and permanent supportive housing. Along the way, the performance requirements, needed skills, and expected outcomes for case managers have also changed dramatically.  To assist Homeless Services Case Managers at all levels of education and expertise, UHHP has developed a comprehensive training program in collaboration with many of the premier homeless provider agencies in Los Angeles, called the Homeless Services Case Management Institute.

This training is a 10-month, 10 module program that combines online training, videos and readings with monthly classroom-based experiential learning.  The program offers state-of-the art curriculum to make the training engaging and relevant to case managers’ daily work.

Overall learning objectives for the program require participants to be able to:

  • Demonstrate a strengths-based approach to case management with homeless and previously homeless clients;
  • Develop and implement an individual development plan that focuses on building on areas of strength and addressing areas of need; and
  • Demonstrate the advantages of case coordination and support between case managers and other colleagues with different life and educational experiences;

The monthly Learning Modules are as follows:

  • Homeless Services Case Managment Core Functions
  • Cultural Competency & Ethics
  • Homeless Services Case Management Effective Practices
  • Housing
  • Mainstream Benefits & System Navagation
  • Health:  Medical, Mental Health, & Substance Use
  • Education, Employment, & Life Skills
  • Violence & Incarceration
  • Documentation:  Data, & Data Management

Who is the program for?

The program is designed for: (1) the paraprofessional, independent learner who would like further knowledge in homeless services, perhaps for college credit, by participating in a certification training program; (2) the licensed professional that wants to gain competence in homeless services by taking individual modules, perhaps for continuing education units (CEUs); and (3) the employer that would like to deliver this training program internally to agency staff who are willing to participate in a train-the- trainer program.

What is the time commitment?
The estimated time commitment is 3-4 hours per week in online reading and discussions, and a half-day, in-person educational session per month.   The in-person sessions will be held at homeless provider agencies around the county.
What is the cost?
The cost of the 10 months of training is $750, payable by credit card or check in advance.
