STRING ORCHESTRA AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
(STRING PLAYERS WITH AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF SCHOOL ORCHESTRA OR PRIVATE LESSONS)
SCALES
Violin, Viola and Cello: Choose any 2 of the following TWO OCTAVE Scales:
String Basses: Choose any 2 of the following ONE OCTAVE Scales:
Please play scales with a full beautiful tone: Quarter note = 88.
SOLO
Prepare and perform any solo of your choice. A well prepared audition will include a solo that features both lyrical and technical aspects. The Suzuki Series is an excellent resource.
SIGHT READING
Students will be asked to sight read a composition that is appropriate for the String Orchestra. The student will be given 1 minute to look over a short excerpt and then asked to play it to the best of their ability.
YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
(FULL ORCHESTRA-MUST BE ABLE TO COMPETE AT AN ALL-STATE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL)
SCALES
Violin, Viola and Cello:
Choose any 2 of the following THREE OCTAVE Scales:
String Basses:
Choose any 2 of the following TWO OCTAVE Scales:
Woodwinds AND Brass: Play three chromatically adjacent scales
Percussion: Play three chromatically adjacent scales on a keyboard instrument

SOLO
Prepare and perform any solo of your choice. A well prepared audition will include a solo that features both lyrical and technical aspects.
**Percussion: Prepare and perform a solo OR excerpt on all of the following instruments: Snare, timpani and any keyboard instrument
