Early Learning Program
The Early Learning Program actor/teacher skill set is two-fold: They are able to lead whole group, interactive drama work with young populations (3-years old through second grade), either with a partner or solo; they can support early childhood educators expand their skill set to include CAT’s interactive drama strategies in their daily practice.
There is on-going training and supervision throughout the year, but new actor/teachers are expected to have a basic understanding of social, cognitive, emotional, and educational development of children, a sensitivity to the needs, pressures and expectations of New York City teachers, and experience in student-centered methodologies. Knowledge of the New York State Common Core Standards as they apply to Math and English Language Arts is a plus, as is experience with Special Education and Engligh Language Learning populations.
The bulk of our current work is the Interactive Storytelling/Teacher Mentoring project (click here for more information), though we also lead issue-based dramas that explore inclusion/exclusion, anti-bullying or emergent literacy. Our work primarily happens in the mornings at sites across the five boroughs. Typically we will work with three classrooms at a site through five days of residency. Throughout the year there are often additional opportunities to lead professional developments with teachers, workshops with parents and facilitate drama work in afterschool s.
Actor/teachers are contracted from September to June as part-time employees (25 hours/week) of the City University of New York and receive heath benefits
