Concurrent Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
and Substance Dependence

Pilar Sumalpong, Ph.D. & Leslie Miranda, LMFT

Please join Pilar Sumalpong, Ph.D., Director of Vista del Mar's Military Support Program and Leslie E. Miranda, LMFT for an informative presentation about effective ways to treat co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder and substance dependence with special emphasis on working with active duty military and/or Veterans.  In the past, it was common practice to first stabilize substance dependence and then address PTSD.  This presentation will cover DSM-V diagnostic criteria for both diagnoses and the newest research suggesting that PTSD and substance dependence be treated concurrently.  Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) will be described with suggestions on how to best incorporate substance dependence and relapse prevention into the standardized protocols for each.

Through lecture, use of examples and discussion, attendees will be able to:

  • Gain familiarity with the cycle of PTSD, avoidance symptoms and substance dependence.
  • Summarize the basic principles underlying Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and EMDR.
  • Integrate substance dependence and relapse prevention intervention into PE, CPT and/or EMDR
