ASHRAE San Diego October Meeting - Commissioning, Energy Auditing and Air Barrier Testing

Description

The focus on building energy use has been steadily growing as energy costs rise and codes become increasingly stringent. With this increased focus on energy, energy audits, air barrier testing and building commissioning are becoming more common topics and requirements in building projects. The 2013 Title 24 Energy Code put a spotlight on these areas with new mandatory requirements for air barrier testing and commissioning that must be incorporated both in the design phase and throughout construction. These Code requirements went into effect on July 1, 2014 but there remains a lack of understanding in the industry about the actual impact of these requirements and how they can be addressed. Failure to address items early in the design and construction process can lead to delays or costly revisions down the road. This presentation reviews the basics of what commissioning, energy auditing and air barrier testing are, what the new Codes require, and some of the practical applications associated with each.

 Presented By

Earl E. (Butch) Beach, CxA, LEED AP

Butch recently joined Randall Lamb as Director of Commissioning in the Building Science Division. Butch is a NEBB Certified Professional in Building Systems Commissioning, Retro-Commissioning, Sound &Vibration as well as Testing & Balance. He has a strong background in HVAC systems and operations developed over the last 16 years through hands on field experience in the Test and Balance & Commissioning disciplines.  He is known for having a knack in troubleshooting, analyzing and optimizing the operation of building mechanical systems. In 2009, Butch became certified as a LEED AP and has since personally successfully commissioned over 20 LEED Certified projects.

Calina Ferraro, PE, CxA, CPD, LEED AP

Calina Ferraro is a Senior Associate and Mechanical Engineer at Randall Lamb. She holds professional engineering licenses in Canada (Ontario), California and Arizona. In addition to playing a leading role in the mechanical design team, she specializes in building energy modeling, which she used for previous employers, as well as commissioning, as part of Randall Lamb’s Building Science Division. She has authored publications on building science and the impact the building envelope on mechanical services, including “Crossing Over:  Thermal Bridges and the Design of Building Fabric - a Key Concern for Both Architects and Services Engineers” for the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Technical Symposium in Leicester, UK (September 2011). Calina’s project experience is diverse, including the commercial, science and technology, healthcare and institutional market sectors.
