2019 Bishop's Convocation

Remembering the Past to Find Our Way into Future
(With Help from the Acts of the Apostles)

History has a way devolving into nostalgia, but that shouldn't happen when we look to Christian history to remind us about who we are and who God is. Acts won't provide us with a perfect, pristine model for ministry that we can copy, but it can re-invigorate our confidence in God's reliability and give us courage to risk and dream. We will explore what Acts says but also questions of why Acts was written and what kind of impact it seeks to have. By putting the lessons of Acts into conversation with our current frustrations and hopes, we'll see how the book sparks creativity and renews faith.

About Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
coeurdalene.org

The Coeur d’Alene area is surrounded by dozens of lakes left behind by the glaciers from the ice age. There are more than 55 lakes within easy driving distance of Coeur d’Alene, but none more scenic and full of activities than Lake Coeur d’Alene itself.

There is something magical about Lake Coeur d’Alene that’s hard to define, but begins with the spectacular North Idaho sunsets and moonrises, the plunge of an osprey after a fish, the glowing lights of downtown Coeur d’Alene reflecting across its waters at night. The perfect place to plan your next vacation and activities.

Speaker: Professor Matthew Skinner, Luther Seminary

Matthew Skinner joined Luther Seminary’s faculty in 2002, having earned his Ph.D. in biblical studies from Princeton Theological Seminary, where he had previously completed his M.Div. and served as a teaching fellow and visiting lecturer. In more recent years he has conducted advanced research at the Center of Theological Inquiry as a member-in-residence and a writing fellow. Skinner’s teaching experience covers the full range of the New Testament canon. His courses focus on the original, ancient settings and circumstances surrounding the creation and preservation of biblical writings as well as how this literature continues to be experienced and interpreted in congregations and other public venues. Much of Skinner’s published work focuses on the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the cultural realities displayed in these writings, and their ongoing theological relevance.
