For individuals, towns or companies that maintain or manage trees, a critical element of the ISO’s risk management process is identifying any risk exposure. This three-hour, on-line course hosted by the ISA New England Chapter details the importance and process for determining tree risk exposure. Risk exposure is the potential for experiencing loss. As tree practitioners, there are several ways in which risk exposure is experienced. Determining tree-risk exposure is the foundation for managing the risk associated with trees for companies or agencies that manage trees. Once identified, strategies can be developed to manage and potentially reduce exposure. The course is separated into three components detailing what tree risk exposure is, how to determine tree-related exposure and finally, methods for addressing the exposure identified.
1:00 The first session will introduce participants to the concept of tree-related risk-exposure. Risk exposure identifies the company or organizations current exposure in four areas of risk concern: physical harm, financial loss, loss of credibility and loss of productivity. The importance of risk exposure will be discussed and focus on two relevant topics. It provides guidance for improvements. Additionally, it allows a company or organization to define what is reasonable, practical and achievable within their unique context.

2:00 The second session will detail how risk exposure can be determined in each of the four areas of risk concern. From this initial discussion, the session will transition to a discussion on how risk exposure informs on risk threshold. The risk threshold is the level of exposure that a company or organization manages to.

3:00 If clients, town residents or park visitors are to enjoy the multiple benefits derived from trees, then some level of risk will be always present. Risk exposure and the subsequent risk threshold strives to identify the balance between the risk and benefits we experience from trees. The final session will outline the strategies for identifying and managing to a pre-defined risk threshold. Closing comments will focus on how the risk exposure analysis process provides the foundation for a defensible program that can too often imply absolute safety is achievable.
