CARBON MITIGATION OPPORTUNITIES: HURDLES AND SOLUTIONS

In 2018, U.S. greenhouse gas emissions totaled 6.7 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents.  Pressure to mitigate these emissions is rapidly increasing to address the developing climate crisis. There is nothing simple about reducing carbon emissions.  It is a topic that is rife with preconceptions and fears as well as technological, economical, and institutional difficulties.

Technology Collaboration Center Workshop

The Technology Collaboration Center (TCC) aims to connect its members by facilitating the exchange of challenges and solutions and provide exposure to “unusual” solutions. The TCC will host this virtual workshop on October 7th, 2020, to identify several pragmatic and “unusual” carbon reduction opportunities. Workshop participants will identify key hurdles and barriers that slow us down. By the facilitated interaction with “unusual” experts you will be able to collaborate to identify and share pragmatic solutions.

Virtual Workshop Approach

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the TCC workshop will be virtual. However, this will be a highly interactive workshop where you will meet and interact with “unusual” experts.

The workshop will be organized around 4 main carbon mitigation approaches.
Handling your own CO2 molecules [Direct] or any CO2 molecules [Indirect].
Avoiding CO2 emissions [Avoid] or capturing and storing CO2 [Store].

A: Direct-Avoid [e.g.:  energy efficiency, switch to renewable power]

B: Indirect-Avoid [e.g.: offset credits for forest conservation, renewable power credits]

C: Direct- Store [e.g.: Carbon capture & sequestration (CCS)]

D: Indirect -Store [e.g.: nature-based solutions such as forestry and soil carbon storage]

Experts will provide short pitches on (“unusual”) technologies in each mitigation approach. By facilitated interaction of experts from different mitigation approaches the teams will identify key hurdles and solutions.

The workshop will create adequate opportunities to feature and discuss novel and “unusual” solutions.  Participants will be encouraged to participate in breakout sessions for different mitigation approaches.

October 7th, 2020 - Workshop Agenda

The workshop will be organized in 3 sessions.

  • Session 1 – Pitch session - Carbon mitigation opportunities [1.5hours]
  • Plenary session with Ca. 8 short pitches about technologies and opportunities for carbon mitigation
  • Session 2 – Key hurdles that make progress challenging [1 hour]
Virtual breakout parallel sessions for A,B,C,D to identify and share key hurdles.
Plenary report-out to obtain an overview of all key carbon mitigation hurdles.
  • Session 3 – Key solutions to reduce hurdles and make progress [1 hour]
Virtual breakout parallel sessions for A,B,C,D to identify and share key solutions
and collaboration opportunities.  Plenary report-out to obtain an overview of all
key carbon mitigation solutions.   Identification of potential collaboration opportunities.
  • Session 4 – Identification of potential collaboration opportunities [0.5 hour]
Plenary session to support participants to connect to enable follow-up after the workshop.
