Navigation Maps & Compass
Sydney, November 19-20, 2016

The Navigation Maps & Compass course will be held on November 19-20 in Sydney. This nationally recognized course will provide participants with Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) training in Navigation Maps and in Navigation Compass. The module includes an examination for proficiency and reviewing two manuals before the course. However this module does not automatically qualify a person to lead in an environment where use of a map or a compass might be required. The course will be delivered by Anjeanette LeMay-Crowtz, OCC certified instructor. It is offered through Hike Nova Scotia in partnership with the NS Chapter of the OCC and supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage.

Participants should have some hiking experience and be able to participate in a low risk natural environment hike on a designated trail while carrying what they will need for a day outside. Participants who successfully meet the course outcomes will earn Outdoor Council of Canada Navigation Maps and in Navigation Compass. Most of the instruction will be in the classroom with a final experiential lesson on the trail. For further information regarding Navigation Certification, please go to http://www.outdoorcouncil.ca.

Times:

  • Saturday, November 19 from 9 am to 5 pm
  • Sunday, November 20 from 9 am to 5 pm
Registration Cost:
  • $100.00 for non-Hike Nova Scotia members
  • $90.00 for current paid Hike Nova Scotia members
  • $75.00 for Duke of Edinburgh's Award volunteer leaders
  • Note: there is a $35 discount for current, paid OCC members (use the OCCMEMBER code in the Promo box on the registration page and remember to click apply)
Registration includes all course materials, a one year membership with the Outdoor Council of Canada and a one year membership with Hike Nova Scotia. Registration is on a first come first served basis. Spaces are limited. Further course information will be provided upon registration. The deadline for registration and payment is: Nov. 11.

Participants must:
  • Review the course manuals in advance of the course (to be distributed electronically to participants once registered and a hard copy provided at the course)
  • Bring their own meals, snacks, beverages, etc. (there will be no time to go off-site for meals)
  • Bring pen and paper
  • Arrange their own accommodation
  • Dress for the outdoors (rain or shine)
  • Bring a Leader Pack as described in the course manual (see point above)
Cancellation Policy:

The Navigation Maps & Compass Course is subsidized for participants, so we need to fill the workshop in order to break even. As such, our cancellation policy requires three full days’ notice in order to reimburse anyone who wishes to cancel their registration (so we require notice of cancellation by email or phone by 5 pm on Nov. 15). This allows time to recruit someone to fill the spot.

If the course organizers must cancel the course due to unforeseen circumstance, it will be cancelled the morning of the day before the course. Participants will be contacted by email and all participants will be reimbursed their registration fees. They will then be contacted regarding a new date for the course.
