Michele Chiarlo Barolo

OldVOSNE-ROMANEE          A Tale of Two Houses:       Jadot & Remoissenet   Port  and Stilton

(Wednesday, April 12, 2017) — Barolo has been called the King of Wines. To many of its fans it deserves the title. The zone is in the Langhe region with its rolling hills. The grape used is Nebbiolo, the earliest to bud and last to ripen. It produces big powerful wines and is also the grape of the nearby Barbaresco zone.

Michele Chiarlo started his winery in 1956 after graduating from the Oenology College of Alba. In the 1960's he was one of the first to send premuium wines of the Piedmont to America.  He has long been considered a “classic” producer, expressing the land with a moderate use of wood.  His son Stefano, also a graduate of the Oenology College of Alba, has been the winemaker since 1999. We will be tasting wines of both father and son. It should be an interesting comparison.

We will be drinking the 1995 Cannubi, 1995 Cerequio, 1998 Brunate, 1998 Cerequio, 1999 Brunate,  1999 Cerequio, 2005 Cannubi, and 2005 Cerequio. Leading us through the experience will be James Pollock, a certified sommelier and wine educator, and instructor at George Brown and Niagara College.

The 1998, 1999 and 2005 vintage were scored well into the 90's by most authorities with these wines in particular being very well regarded. The 1995 vintage was also good, if perhaps not quite up to the high standard set by the others. The status of the three single vineyards is not in dispute. All are excellent,  especially the Cerequio, deep and dark with hints of the local cherries.

Join us and pay homage to the King (of wines). You will be well rewarded.

As always with our tastings, this event will be strictly non-smoking, and we request your cooperation in not wearing any scented after-shave or perfume.  Using public transit is strongly encouraged.  Please do not drink and drive.
