Old Port and Stilton

Old Port and Stilton

(Wednesday, February 10, 2016) — If there is one type of wine this club is blessed with an abundance of, it is Vintage Port. And so it is to this section of the cellar we have turned for our February tasting. We went into the deepest corner to select some real oldies.

[Register now online. | Register now by mail.] We have four vintages (1963, 1966, 1970, and 1977), all of which are considered classic years. Whilst Vintage Port is made (or declared) only in the better years, these are among the very best vintages of the 20th century. Looking through web-based vintage charts, they are all listed as either drink/hold or hold/drink. In other words, Vintage Ports generally from these vintages are judged to be at their peak of drinking.

We are also comparing six different houses: Croft ‘66 and ‘77, Delaforce ‘77, Dow ‘70, Graham ‘63, Martinez ‘63, and Taylor ‘66 and 70). Vintage Ports are very complex, which means the house wine making style differentiates them. Many Port aficionados have their favourite house because these differences can be quite easily identifiable. We can look into that a bit more at the tasting

Ports, in their best years, are very long lived wines. These have certainly lived long. Have they prospered? In researching this bulletin I came upon relatively recent tasting notes for many of these wines. It seems they are holding up very well indeed. Join us on the 10th and we shall see for ourselves. Note that as a special treat we will be serving Stilton and chocolate with the wines so you can evaluate these traditional pairings.

As always with our tastings, this event will be strictly non-smoking, and we request your cooperation in not wearing any scented after-shave or perfume. Using public transit is strongly encouraged. Do not drink and drive.
